Monoa masks are used in the Shroud by the law and criminals alike in order to hide their identity from the Elementals and ward themselves from their wrath. I figured it would make sense for Keepers to have come up with their own design; not only reflecting their own appearance and guardian deity, but also freeing their nostrils for their acute sense of smell, and their mouth for whistling Huntspeak.
